THIRD LEBANESE WAR
ALESSANDRO CIMMA
On October 7, 2023, following Hamas's attack on Israeli territory, the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) began targeting Hezbollah militias on Lebanese soil.
On September 24, 2024, Israeli forces intensified bombings in central Beirut, killing all high-ranking members of the Party of God and eliminating Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's supreme leader, on September 27.
At that point, the city descended into chaos: refugees exceeded one million, entire neighborhoods were razed to the ground, and casualties reached 4,000. The war impacted everyone, including the Christian community, particularly in southern Lebanon.
In the area of the Blue Line, there are several satellite villages: some predominantly Muslim, others mixed Christian-Muslim, and a few entirely Christian villages. In some of the latter, residents decided not to leave their homes. Unfortunately, most of these villages were depopulated following warning messages from Israel stating: “You have 24 hours to leave your homes; we may bomb.” One of these villages is Ain-Ebel, where the population fled, leaving only seven people who chose to stay behind to guard their homes.
One of the few “safe” Christian villages is Rmeich, located a couple of kilometers from the Israeli border. Initially home to 11,000 residents, the population shrank to 5,000 after the war broke out, consisting mainly of men. The village lies in a relatively non-strategic area, as it is flat and surrounded by hills. Nevertheless, the war echoes all around, and almost daily, Hezbollah missiles are intercepted by the Israeli defense system right over the heads of Rmeich’s inhabitants.
